Curriculum: JMC Core and Tracks
It’s All About Convergence
The buzzword in media today is “convergence” – jargon for the integration of words, graphics, still photos and video online. JMC’s curriculum reflects this revolution.
Creighton journalism students in all tracks master this new style of communicating without sacrificing the department’s traditional emphasis on rigorous writing standards, critical thinking and ethics. JMC was a pioneer in computer graphics instruction and in recognizing that old-style broadcasting instruction was transitioning to online communications. That’s why you’ll find Photojournalism and Digital New Media Tracks but no Broadcasting Track.
The blurring of distinctions among media fields means that all JMC majors, regardless of track, must be able to:
- Write clear, concise copy. Students can fulfill all their Arts and Sciences Certified Writing requirements within the JMC curriculum.
- Communicate graphically using high tech hardware and software programs. All majors must complete Print Design and Web Design. Writing classes include video assignments.
In addition, all JMC majors must become critical thinkers and ethical communicators so they are required to take courses in media history, law and ethics and most select International Mass Communication for their global studies requirement.
JMC’s state-of-the-art curriculum gives graduates an edge in finding jobs. One year, some seniors were hired for positions that hadn’t existed when they enrolled at Creighton but they were ready.
